Space Battleship Yamato 2010

Plot:
In the year 2194 AD, Earth was attacked by an alien race called the Gamilas. They bombarded the Earth with highly radioactive material, taking the planet's green and turned it into a desolate Mars-like planet. The surviving human race took their battle to the stars, intending to survive and turn away their enemies. During this time, ace pilot Susumu Kodai of the Earth Defense Forces led his fighter squadron to stop a new wave of incoming radioactive meteors; unfortunately, while he defended Earth,


a part of the meteor hit and critically damaged a nearby space satellite this his own parents were stationed. Wrought with guilt over the incident, he quit and became a metal scavenger.
The story begins at 2199 AD (5 years later), at Mars. The Earth Defense Force had taken their battle to the stars and tried to launch a counter-offensive against the Gamilas; unfortunately, the battle was a complete failure. The Gamilas easily defended themselves against humanity's primitive technology and destroyed their fleet. During the battle, Captain Mamoru Kodai (Susumu's big brother), sacrificed his life to help Captain Otika and his ship survive the onslaught and retreated back to Earth. It was this time they encountered Susumu.
Susumu continued his days as a precious metal scavenger. One day, while scanning for metals, a meteor impacted near his area, exposing him to the toxic radioactive atmosphere. To his surprise, he didn't die from the radiation, but was knocked out; before he was knocked out, he found a probe. It was this time that Otika's ship returned to Earth and found Kodai and the probe.
On board Otika's ship, the crew analyzed the probe and was surprised to find engineering schematics for a warp drive engine and directions to new planetary system. Kodai had been awakened by the medic and they were all surprised that the radiation didn't kill him, but to Kodai, the bigger issue was that he learned his brother died defending Otika; he blamed and accused Otika as using his brother's ship as a shield to survive. Kodai wanted to beat-up Otika, but his former squad subordinate, Yuki Mori, stopped him, telling him he wasn't there to understand the situation.
Otika believed that Kodai's miraculous recovery was due to the probe and convinced his superiors to allow him to command their latest ship, the Yamato, to go and recover technology that could save the Earth. Even though it was a mere gamble, the Commander-in-Chief, Heikurō Tōdō, sanctioned this mission of hope; he relayed his message of hope by a wide broadcast, telling everyone that the Yamato will set out on a mission to Iscandar, a planet located in the Large Magellanic Cloud, in hopes to cure the radiation crisis. After seeing the announcement, about the mission of hope, Kodai decided to re-enlist and was automatically set as the squadron leader of the Black Tiger Squad.
